Do the Disco Dabke

How to dabke, the hottest dance in the Middle East (according to wikiHow):
- Grab 10-20 of your close friends
- Form a single-file line or circle
- Hold hands with the people standing next to you
- Take two steps in either the left or right direction, depending on which way the line is moving at the time
- Gently kick your foot in the air, but don’t over-do it
- Repeat!
Of course, this may or may not be very successful without the right music, and luckily Sublime Frequencies has just released another collection of lo-fi bangers from the incredible Omar Souleyman for your dancing pleasure. ‘Dabke 2020′ features eight excerpts from the more sprawling keyboard-and-saz jams that comprise Souleyman’s live show, which I have never seen in person but must be phenomenal based on clips like this:
The man has been an international phenomenon for years, something brought to attention to many Westerners for the first time with his ‘Highway to Hassake’ compilation in 2007, also released by Sublime Frequencies and definitely worth checking out. For now dig on the bizarre “I Will Make a Trap,” the cut on ‘Dabke 2020′ that best epitomizes the album’s titular scenario with futuristic drum-pad fx, some seriously hot vocals from Mr. Souleyman, and a sense of rhythmic propulsion that makes it seem like the song is constantly folding in upon itself.
