Runaway has been roaming the dark realm between house, techno, and disco for a while now, pillaging the countryside and spreading general dance chaos. Releasing on everything from Wurst to REKIDS to I’m a Cliche, Jacques Renault and Marcos Cabral are redefining the NY dance scene. They make new music that references the old sleaze of disco and repackages it into dark beardy club anthems. They have a new release out that I have been quite into and I have to say that their “Shadows” release that showed up on L&PT’s BBC Essential mix is truly incredible.
So normally I write some more and tell you how great the release is, but I’m drunk and my mac n cheese is almost done so I’m just gonna give you the trax. Here they are, tonight’s a two-fer. The new track off of the new label On The Prowl and the classic from the aforementioned release, dig dig dig it.
Yesterday I received my RL copy of the new RVNG 7″ Purple Brain release we mentioned not too long ago and all I have to say is if you were a lazy asshole and just tracked it down on the internet, you are missing out! I’m a zucker for great packaging and this one is particularly nicely put together with a rad poster and insert. Highly recommended if you haven’t bought a copy because the mix is exquisite and the edits just as great.
In other news, Jason and I have another BEARDS OF A FEATHER party at Laszlo a week from today, June 23rd. Music goes 9-2 and even though it’s a Tuesday you should make no excuse for not being there. We will be playing the usual best of beardo, disco, cosmic, italo, house, and of course balearic summer jamz 2009, if you stay late enough! It’s free to come out and please feel free to say hello! FB group is here just in case you haven’t joined and the event is here. We may be graced by the presence of a special guest, but I will let you know more as we figure out the details.
Now on to the music. Permanent Vacation has been consistently amazing the past few years (releases featuring 40 Thieves, Holy Ghost!, Woolfy v. Projections, etc.) and I had lost track of what the label had been up to in the past few months, until I heard this release.
Not only is this from the LABEL Permanent Vacation, it is by a GROUP ingeniously named Permanent Vacation. The 12″ features “Tic Toc” a piano house track that screams Chicago, except cut the black male vocals and replace it with silky low slung disco sleeze from Kathy Diamond (see “Whispers” from Aeroplane if you have been living under a rock). That track is great, but then you flip the record over and that’s where the real magic is hidden. PV the GROUP (which is actually two dudes I’ve never heard of Benji Frölich and Tom Bioly) delivers a haunting leftfield/oddball/disco-not-disco groover with wailing strings and menacing horns aptly named after a German sugar cone, duh! (see their myspace for a buy link) And I’m gunng just put it out there, when it comes to things that have come out of Germany, Permanent Vacation >>>> Nazis so stop watching the history channel and start listening.
