LINDSTRØM AND CHRISTABELLE AND THE SPACE IGLOO

Lindstrøm, circa yesterday

Lindstrøm, circa yesterday

Do you you remember the first time you heard “I Feel Space,” and thought, “Gee, wouldn’t it be great if, instead of just referencing Moroder in a way some terrible critic will eventually describe as ‘cheeky,’ Lindstrøm would just straight-up make a Moroder album, but, like, the twenty-first century version?”

Ha! How young you were: because what you really meant was: “I wish Lindstrøm would make album after album of 10-minute-plus space-prog-disco jams influenced by a variety of Germans from the 1970s, and Vangelis.” And he granted that wish, because he heard you, inside his space igloo orbiting Oslo, where he entertains guests and uses marijuana freely, by making such albums as Lindstrøm and Pris Thomas and Where You Go I Go Too and Lindstrøm and Prins Thomas II, which is the second album he made with Prins Thomas, a frequent guest of the Oslo-orbiting space igloo.

And yet, if you did, in fact, say, “Where, and when, will I be able to hear Lindstrøm do Giorgio, instead of Vangelis, or Jan Hammer, or fucking Cluster?” you can be forgiven, because your question is answered: you can hear it in the comfort of your own home, on January 18, because he is releasing an album called Real Life Is No Cool with Christabelle, who, God knows why, used to be called Solale, and is probably actually Prins Thomas.

(You’ll notice that I’ve made the unbelievably sexist assumption that this is Lindstrøm’s album more than it is Christabelle’s. This is partly because I don’t know anything about Christabelle, and also because I am confused by my feelings for Lindstrøm in an exciting way, and how can I be sexist, if I am gay, or at least bi-curious?)

Now, I can already hear your disco-nerd boners sucking blood from your pot bellies as you get ready to yell at me: “This isn’t Moroder! This doesn’t sound anything like Moroder! Your blog is terrible!” All of which is true. I mean: it does sound like Moroder, in the same way that WYGIGT sounded like Vangelis, which means, sort of, in fits and starts, here and there. But the Moroder comparison is the way in to the record, for me; it’s how to start listening to it and thinking about it. Because, let’s be honest, you don’t put your name on a synth disco album with a female singer without paying tithes to Moroder and Donna Summer. Lindstrøm is doing his own thing here the way he’s always done his own thing, which is to take his favorite records (or what I assume are his favorite records) and reimagine them: what would this sound like if it were released in 2009? And also, if I made it sound like we just drank a lot of cough syrup in the studio?

As you can guess, the whole thing is fucking ridiculous. Every day I have a new favorite track; the missteps are few and far between. “Lovesick” sounds a little bit like that N.E.R.D. song “Lapdance” (LOL, obviously), but is mostly its own stuttering, stomping beast; “High and Low” is a radar-pinging slow jam with a smoking guitar solo; “Baby Can’t Stop” sounds like the funnest night out, ever. Truth is, I might like it more even than all those blunted synth jam sessions, and that’s saying a lot—I mean, the real truth is, there are a couple tracks on here as good as “I Feel Space”—and that says everything.

JOIN THE DISCO HORROR MAILING LIST!

One last reminder, our inaugural party is tonight at 222 Club in the Tenderloin. The place has a new soundsystem and also a larger dance floor than it used to! The party starts at 9 and Dan Judd aka. Sorcerer will be kicking things off so be sure to get there early! And remember it’s FREE so say fuck the work week and come party with us!

Mark E, one of our favorites here at DiscoHorror, has finally been releasing all of the looped slo-mo madness he has been gradually unleashing on dance floors worldwide for the past year or two on an assortment of labels, so here is the first of four posts covering his latest and semi-latest releases.

I’ll kick things off with an opener that rises out of the depths like a sunrise over the open ocean, slowly bleaching the night sky until it turns it to a pale morning gray. Then finally washing you over with warm beams as it begins to peer over the waves crashing on the beach. The hypnotizing beat with its whooshing synths stirring up the calm sea. The release, Codsall Juniors, features two original compositions released on the fantastic Endless Flight label and I first heard this track on Mark E’s RA Podcast, but KZA has also used it in his new mix I’m Starting to Feel OK Vol. 3, enjoy!

THIS POST IS ABOUT THE TIME I WENT TO CROATIA, AND ALSO HUNGARY

LOL I took a picture of a sunset with an instant camera, someone put me out of my misery

Oh my God y’all it’s been too long.

Blogging just runs in my blood, you feel me, and spending this much time away from the game is like being trampled by a horse who instead of having hooves has swords as feet. I bet most of you thought I was off doing some super-secret government shit, like converting the entire U.S. cabinet to Muslimry or murdering white babies for use in consommés, but the real deal is this: I went to Croatia, and then to Hungary, and then I spent three weeks living with my parents just illing.

Croatia! Have you ever been? Don’t tell anyone but it is awesome. It is sort of a secret, since everyone assumes that it is filled with murderous Slavs of various difficult-to-discern identities, like maybe Russia, but with more guns and unexploded mines. Well: everyone who assumes that is wrong (by the way, British people, I know you know about Croatia, and do you know why I know? Because there are literally thousands of you, pale and drunk, scattered across the coast, making Americans look like models of respect and restraint). Croatia, it turns out, is basically Italy, but without any boring culture that your Lonely Planet guide guilts you into seeing. Actually, it is more beautiful than Italy, because there are slightly fewer of those guys selling the weird dancing paper Mickey Mouse toys, and also because you can basically just give up pretending to speak in Italian because you took Spanish 201 in college. Seriously, guys, this place is like whoa.

I mean, people are all like, “Balearic music! Balearic islands!” or whatever, which is cool, I’m sure, except that this is like: Balearic squared. This is like, when you listen to Smith & Mudd, and you’re like, what does this remind me of, well, it reminds you of Croatia.

Budapest is not really anything like Croatia. Really what it is like is Paris, except not as loud, or large, and everyone speaks Hungarian, which is a hilarious made-up language with—I’m not joking here—three different versions of the letter “O.” I could tell you about the beautiful things I saw, or all the gyros I ate, except really the absolute and unquestionable highlight of my week there–of my whole trip–was the stuffed goose neck I ate at this little Jewish-Hungarian restaurant called Fülemüle. This is what it tasted like: damn.

So then I got home, and I was all, “I’m gonna get back to posting, cause my fans missed me,” and then instead I figured I would sit around and feel sorry for my underemployed self, which has worked out pretty well so far.

Anyway, the takeaway is this:

1) I’m looking for work (LOL, kill me), so if you know anyone who needs some writing done, email me: max@discohorror.com. I will literally write about anything, for money, so, you know. Please.

2) Or, Jesus, even a retail job, admin work, rentboy, whatever, in New York City. Bonus if you know about two jobs–I’m not the only unemployed person in my apartment (know any art world jobs? Design-y type things?).

3) Croatia is bad-ass. Budapest is ridiculous. We have a bunch of photos up here.

5) I have a ton of shit to give you over the next few days–including a track from a CD by an artist whose name rhymes with “Pindstrøm and Pristabelle”–but for now I’m just gonna leave you with a little Croatian ditty called “Vilo Moja” (pronounced “VEE-lo MOY-a”) by a group called Crikvenica (pronounced, um, with noises). This is an example of “Klapa” singing, where a bunch of Croatian dudes get together and get drunk and sing harmonies with each other while they play a mandolin, and I spent three hours one day listening to songs like this at a bar where this was the view:

LOL I took a picture of beer with my iPhone seriously someone kill me

And for the music for my momentous return to posting, the new release off of Golf Channel Records that Harvey played one side of on BIS last February.  Finally seeing the light of day, this is the label’s newest release since the incredible Try And Find Me Vol 1.  It features two reworkings, the first of Chris Munoz’s “Liza” and the other of Dr Hook and the Medicine Show’s “Penicillin Penny”.  Both of these are incredible , Liza is the long-lost secret weapon now turned commercial success, but today I will share  “Penicillin Penny” because that’s my favorite on the release. Check out the jammy vid for the OG as well. Enjoy!

Inaugural Beardo Disco Party (with Sorcerer!)

October 13th, 2009 by Erik

Yet another night of DiscoHorror debauchery is upon us just next Wednesday, October 21st when we welcome our special guest DJ Dan Judd A.K.A. Sorcerer to our new night at the amazing 222 Club in the Tenderloin. We’re keeping it simple this time and calling the night ‘Beardo Disco’, as that will be exactly we’re playing there, because we love it so. You can undoubtedly expect some curveballs from Judd, as evidenced on his recent ‘Midnight Mixx‘ which runs the gamut from eccentric indie like Stereolab and Yura Yura Teikoku to laid back gangsta rap from Compton’s Most Wanted and even a few balearic tunes for good measure. The mix has been posted on Soundcloud for a month or two now, but take a listen anyways and be SURE to check out the event on Facebook!

Next we will finally share some much-needed new music, a fresh remix of Grackle A.K.A. Speculator’s “Desert Acid” by German duo Musiccargo. The vinyl release is being handled by reliable European imprint Supersoul Recordings, and features another excellent cosmic/new-age version by Sombrero Galaxy aka Tako and Johnny Nash (of current DH-faves Discossession). But the Musiccargo remix is another thing entirely- a vaguely kraut-influenced slow-burner of a dance track with some lovely bell tones and catchy German-language vocals that I haven’t stopped playing since I got the 12″ in the mail a few weeks back. You may recognize Musiccargo from a track featured on Prins Thomas’ epochal ‘Cosmo Galactic Prism’ mix- which is a very esteemed honor around here- and the group also released their debut LP ‘Hand in Hand’ in July on Düsseldorf-based Amontillado Music. I’ve yet to track down a copy of the full-length but this remix is more than enough to hold anyone over in the meantime.

I Feel Good, Put Your Pants On

September 22nd, 2009 by Erik

We have been inexcusably neglectful to this dear blog in the last few weeks, and to somehow make up for this we offer you a new, crazy night of Discohorror DJ madness – ‘I FEEL GOOD, PUT YOUR PANTS ON’ (Check it out HERE on F-book).  We’re sticking with the Poleng Lounge again for this shindig, but the night has changed to Tuesday – TONIGHT! – September 22, and we’re kinda ditching the whole ‘Acid Test’ psychedelic theme for a more all-encompassing, free-your-ass-and-your-mind-will-follow-type vibe. Festivities will kick off at around 10, hope to see some of you there!

In other news, tons of great music has been released in the last few weeks- and I guess it’s my job to share it with y’all. Tirk Records has long been a reliable source of well-crafted nu-disco and nu-balearic jams, with a roster including DH faves Sorcerer and The Time and Space Machine. This time around however, it’s new signee Son of Sound who is blowing my mind with a well-rounded beardy dance-rock sound not unlike the Laughing Light of Plenty or even the Talking Heads. Son of Sound consists of one Henry Maldonado, a dude who has been active in the New York City house scene since the early 90s, releasing stuff on labels like Strictly Rhythm in their heyday. His robust male-diva vocals are the perfect counterpart to the percussive onslaughts and funky guitar licks of “Life Under Bridges,” the first track on the ‘No Retribution’ EP, released last month.

Son Of Sound – Life Under Bridges

The next track is another immaculate remix coming from our favorite musical Motherland, this time from Norwegian Joachim Dyrdahl, aka diskJokke. Dyrdahl recently released a collection of his remixes between 2007 and 2008 on the Smalltown Supersound label, but his take on Social Disco Club & Maia’s “The Way You Move” from earlier this year is a more recent testament to his producing abilities. Starting off with a couple plaintive piano notes and drum kicks, the tune unfolds for several minutes, slowly revealing layers of analog synth beauty before the original song’s vocal sample even begins to kick in. The remix is included on the ‘Way You Move’ 12″ single, out now on Bear Funk.

DRUNK POST… FUCK TITLES

Runaway has been roaming the dark realm between house, techno, and disco for a while now, pillaging the countryside and spreading general dance chaos. Releasing on everything from Wurst to REKIDS to I’m a Cliche, Jacques Renault and Marcos Cabral are redefining the NY dance scene. They make new music that references the old sleaze of disco and repackages it into dark beardy club anthems. They have a new release out that I have been quite into and I have to say that their “Shadows” release that showed up on L&PT’s BBC Essential mix is truly incredible.

So normally I write some more and tell you how great the release is, but I’m drunk and my mac n cheese is almost done so I’m just gonna give you the trax. Here they are, tonight’s a two-fer.  The new track off of the new label On The Prowl and the classic from the aforementioned release, dig dig dig it.

Dudes of the Disco Horror movement: A year ago I started this blog with a mix and so I figured it only appropriate to share a second Sunset Stands Still Mix to commemorate the year marker. It is meant for prolonging those summer nights as they grow shorter in the coming months of Fall.  I think the site has come quite a ways from its blogspot origins and I would like to thank Max and Erik for all their hard work helping with the site and sharing rad tracks, mixes and other media of interest.

But most of all I would like to thank YOU the FANZ and FOLLOWERZ! Without you, the strung-out nights snorting heroin off of Thai prostitutes would not have been worth it!  No but seriously, we appreciate the moments you take out of your day to read our posts, it’s what keeps Max from cutting off his ponytail, getting a real job, and slipping further into the “depressing” reality that is the working world.

So again, thank you for reading and don’t think that we will let all this fame and attention go to our heads.  We have top scientists in the Disco Horror laboratory vigilantly genetically engineering apes to come up with new ways to improve the blog and make it more appealing and addictive.  Expect more rad tunes, more rad interviews, more rad mixes, and hopefully if the stars align a guest DJ mix or two from our intergalactic network of music makers.

Maybe if you’re lucky, in another two years I’ll make a montage of our times spent together staring at a computer screen but for now you must settle for my latest mix of tracks I’ve been playing out a lot recently.  I broke a few of my own rules of diversifying labels and artists on this one, but I think it works pretty well.  This is more along the disco house vibe, but there’s some good new and old on here, hope you dig!
