WEIRD SCIENCE

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

Beards of a Feather is next Tuesday with special guest DJ Pickpocket from DONUTS! She has rad records and she throws rad parties with shows coming up in NYC on June 11 with Blones, Q&A, My Cousin Roy, and Beat Electric DJs and another big one on July 1 with Dam Funk and Nite Jewel (together as Nite Funk) at the Mezzanine.  The best beardo San Francisco has to offer!

I’ll forgo the apologies for neglectful posting, they are becoming routine, but don’t you worry, good things are in the mix and will be coming soon.  As for now, the latest off of RVNG is a new release by Allez-Allez, one of the only labels whose releases wake me from my lethargic state of apathy.  No, not the incredible 80s group responsible for African Queen, but rather the dudes who run one of my favorite blogs on the internet who are merely referencing that group, duh.  Either way, this is churning sci-fi inspired synthetic disco meant for warping Friday evenings into the cosmic realm and it comes with a bizarrely amusing video that I absolutely love.  The entire EP, titled Hideous Racket, is real quality so buy it HERE if you dig “Weird Science”.

Here’s the video too.

Love is a beautiful thing

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

Hey hey! So I wanted to get a quick post out to remind anyone in the area that Beards of a Feather is TONIGHT! That’s right, the first Tuesday of April is here so it’s time for weekday debauchery at Laszlo. This month, I am joined by one of my favorite DJs in the city, Conor. The dude has some of the raddest records in San Francisco, in my opinion, and I’m constantly buying stuff off of him on discogs, so be sure to come by tomorrow night and get it from the source.

As a little taste of some of the beardy cosmic jams I have in store for tomorrow evening, here is a limited 7″ by The Singin’ Fools originally released in 1977 that was just repressed or rereleased or something. Either way, the b-side on it is an incredibly funky jam washed with the heavy vocals of a soul choir. This is meant for starting the night out right and sending into the truly cosmic realm. See you tomorrow!

Life’s a beach

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Friday rolls around and I feel like posting what I had planned on posting a few weeks ago, so today’s the day.  I’ve been feeling particularly tropical lately, listening to a ton of Herb Alpert and Tullio de Piscopo and dressing like Dr. Jacoby from Twin Peaks.  Also, my monthly night at Laszlo is drawing near (next Tuesday) and I will be DJing with none other than Dan Judd aka Sorcerer, master of analog tropical vibes.  Dan will be sharing the best of his beach boogie collection as well as some of the footage he has scoured countless thrift shop VHS bins for that you commonly see in his most radical self-made music videos.  So come by cause it’s FREE and the best thing I know of to do on a Tuesday night!

The video to Sorcerer’s “Push to Freeze”.

I picked up the Versus EP a month or two ago because of the Stallions (Lovefingers and Lee Douglas) track on it, but was pleasantly surprised to find this B-side jam that I have been playing out nonstop.  It’s a Findlay Brown (indie/folk rocker who I know nothing about) track produced by Lynchmob (this dude Brendan Lynch who has been around forevskis but about whom I know nothing).  But it jams man, and takes me back in time and space to a cabana in the Caribbean circa 1978.

Findlay Brown – Nobody Cared (Lynchmob Version)

Then there’s this dude that Erik found on DJ History and turned me onto Zarrylade.  This dude channels Sting without sounding like a gimmick and brings me back to the days when I first heard the Police.  Seriously amazing jam that I have been playing on repeat.  The release also features a fleshed out remix by Leo Zero.  A tropical electronic dance session in order.

Zarrylade – Eyes Above Your Head Part II (Leo Zero Version)

Changing pace a bit I have been listening to Quiet Village’s remix of Jonathan Jeremiah’s “Happiness” quite a bit lately.  RCRDLBL posted this track last year and it was a jaw-dropper in my opinion.  A tribute to the lush string ballad production of days past, truly the sound of paradise.  It sounds to me like the soundtrack to the most beautiful sunrise.  One of the best things Quiet Village have done in my opinion, and that’s saying a lot.  Enjoy happiness.

More beachin tunes to come.

And for the music for my momentous return to posting, the new release off of Golf Channel Records that Harvey played one side of on BIS last February.  Finally seeing the light of day, this is the label’s newest release since the incredible Try And Find Me Vol 1.  It features two reworkings, the first of Chris Munoz’s “Liza” and the other of Dr Hook and the Medicine Show’s “Penicillin Penny”.  Both of these are incredible , Liza is the long-lost secret weapon now turned commercial success, but today I will share  “Penicillin Penny” because that’s my favorite on the release. Check out the jammy vid for the OG as well. Enjoy!

It will be disco, house and debaucherous in the usual cosmic beardo style so if you are in the area come on by! Randstrom and Combaticus will be opening the party up and I will be closing it out so come and let’s let things get a little crazy. The facts:

And to continue our summery stretch of tunes here is something you should have been familiar with all summer, but just in case you missed it, here it is: Glass Candy’s summer jam that is pure bliss. Alluding to/sampling Geto Boy’s NY gangsta rap classic “My Mind Playing Playing Tricks On Me” which samples Isaac Hayes “Hung Up On My Baby”, the track has a crispy light thump to it that’s perfect for sunsets at the beach or cruising through the city. Jewel’s production continues to amaze me. Don’t miss the 12″ out now with several versions of the track along with another beautiful track “Animal Imagination”.  Get it at the IDIB store!

BREAKING NEWS: german sugar cone inspires rad new music

beards_v2c

Yesterday I received my RL copy of the new RVNG 7″ Purple Brain release we mentioned not too long ago and all I have to say is if you were a lazy asshole and just tracked it down on the internet, you are missing out!  I’m a zucker for great packaging and this one is particularly nicely put together with a rad poster and insert.  Highly recommended if you haven’t bought a copy because the mix is exquisite and the edits just as great.

In other news, Jason and I have another BEARDS OF A FEATHER party at Laszlo a week from today, June 23rd.  Music goes 9-2 and even though it’s a Tuesday you should make no excuse for not being there.  We will be playing the usual best of beardo, disco, cosmic, italo, house, and of course balearic summer jamz 2009, if you stay late enough!  It’s free to come out and please feel free to say hello!  FB group is here just in case you haven’t joined and the event is here.  We may be graced by the presence of a special guest, but I will let you know more as we figure out the details.

Now on to the music.  Permanent Vacation has been consistently amazing the past few years (releases featuring 40 Thieves, Holy Ghost!, Woolfy v. Projections, etc.) and I had lost track of what the label had been up to in the past few months, until I heard this release.

Not only is this from the LABEL Permanent Vacation, it is by a GROUP ingeniously named Permanent Vacation.  The 12″ features “Tic Toc” a piano house track that screams Chicago, except cut the black male vocals and replace it with silky low slung disco sleeze from Kathy Diamond (see “Whispers” from Aeroplane if you have been living under a rock).  That track is great, but then you flip the record over and that’s where the real magic is hidden.  PV the GROUP (which is actually two dudes I’ve never heard of Benji Frölich and Tom Bioly) delivers a haunting leftfield/oddball/disco-not-disco groover with wailing strings and menacing horns aptly named after a German sugar cone, duh! (see their myspace for a buy link)  And I’m gunng just put it out there, when it comes to things that have come out of Germany, Permanent Vacation >>>> Nazis so stop watching the history channel and start listening.

STUDIO/WINDSURFsolve the economic crisis!

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009
My titles more and more are sounding tabloidesque… Well it’s not entirely true, but if five years ago people had been listening to more Studio and Windsurf, I think this whole problem might have been solved. All the greedy dickwads with their heads so far up each others asses trying to make a higher percentage or commission off a deal might have been dreaming about escaping it all to a beach where they could forget their cares and listen to the waves lapping against the shore. I guess I’m making Studio sound like the Greatful Dead of the new millenia, but seriously this music takes my cares away without fail so that’s why I’m sharing it with you all today.

The new release by Windsurf “Bird Of Paradise” on Prins Thomas’ Internasjonal is another chapter in the book of Studio are production gods and masters of the balearic universe. It seems the perfect marriage of artists as well, because Windsurf (the collaboration of San Francisco’s own Hatchback and Sorcerer) are also princes of the beach-inspired kingdom of electronic music. Their original is a dreamy little piece with vocals that suit a sunrise by the shoreside. Studio take the song and spin it into over 13 minutes blissful minutes of magic. The Beat Broker also features a dub of Windsurf’s “Light As Day” which is also worth mentioning. Corny as it may sound, this music has made my week, I hope it makes yours.

Windsurf – Bird Of Paradise (Version By Studio)

Also big live news!

Robots In Heat and I will be DJing another night at Laszlo in the Mission and guess what, it’s on the WEEKEND! Saturday May 23rd, (that’s Memorial Day weekend). So you have no excuse not to come out. We will be playing our usual mix of beardo disco with whatever else we fancy at the moment! It will be great fun if any of you can make it, join the Facebook group/event, or we started a Going event just to see how that might work out. Tell your friends and we hope to see you there!

The Communist Dance Party

Tonight is the night and I couldn’t be more excited. To celebrate our guest Tom Croose, I’ve decided to share with you a track from Worst Friends‘ (of which he is one half) release to be due out soon. Worst Friends has created a dreamy guitar driven beach jam with “Pillows Of Wind” and the release features a strung out percussive remix by Bostro Pesopeo that sounds like an acid trip that begins under water and finishes with you dancing with natives on a deserted beach. But my favorite off of this release is the Tom Croose remix on the b-side track that is a bit more mellow and shuffles along rainy Sunday afternoon. Enjoy this and come see Tom, Jason and myself play our favorite jams tonight. Hope to see you there!

New Year’s Bliss

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

I am so sorry for being absent for so long, I took an extended holiday break from posting. Things have been busy and when you fall out of the habit of posting and begin watching Battlestar Galactica at the same time, time seems to fly by. Either way we are back with a new track for you and some exciting news. On Sunday this MLK weekend I will be ringing in the day of Dr. MLK at the Briss Bar party my good friend Jaxon from Robots In Heat and I are having at the Bliss Bar in Noe Valley. Actually, it’s not much of a party but we will be playing some downtempo jams and if you’re Sunday evening is free you should definitely stop by. The bar is located at 4026 24th Street and while I’ve never been I’m sure Jaxon and I will round up a good time with some low key vibes. I would also like to take this time to announce the first Disco Horror/Robots In Heat disco party Beards Of A Feather which will be taking flight at the end of next month at the wonderful 222 Club in the Tenderloin. More details to come as we figure them out, but mark Thursday, February 26th on your calendars because it is sure to be a fantastic time. But that is the news for now, so how about some music.
Rune Lindbæk was featured a few months ago for his Klubb Kebabb LP from 2007, but just a month or so ago he released his Bonat Synthesizer EP. The four track record contains a range of original material covering various directions in Scandinavian nu-disco, the title track of which features Hans-Peter Lindstrøm himself on drums. (For those who haven’t heard, Lindstrøm is gracing San Francisco with his presence on January 31st at the spectacular Paradise Lounge). The track I share with you is the most upbeat of the melancholy jams on this EP, driven by a bouncy low pass filter bass line, crisp drumwork, and a horn sample that propels the song’s few crescendos out of a fog of verby synths. A sweet track, enjoy this “Nautilus” as you explore the ocean deep to find the fluorescent brilliance of creatures that hide in the dark flickering to the beats put forth by Rune, enjoy with a dose of “Deep Sea” off of the Blue Planet series.

Things Are Gonna Get Easier…

Thursday, December 4th, 2008
So tonight Sebastien Tellier comes to town tonight and I couldn’t be more stoked for the French pop god’s arrival. The show is at the Mezzanine, tickets are $15 I believe (you can purchase them here) and I think doors are at 9PM. San Francisco DJs Blackshag, BT Magnum and Safety Scissors will be in attendance as well so come early and stay late for them. To commemorate this occassion I’ve decided to share with you a track from a Low Motion Disco 7″ I picked up this summer. The track is my favorite thing Tellier has done, but if anything him singing “ooh child, things are gonna get easier…” in a ridiculous French accent makes me laugh out loud. Everything on Sexuality is much better but for those of you who haven’t heard it, here is Tellier’s remix of Low Motion Disco‘s “Things Are Gonna Get Easier.”

Low Motion Disco – Things Are Gonna Get Easier (Sebastien Tellier Remix)

There are quite a few other shows this weekend as well. Tomorrow night Chicago house godfather Marshall Jefferson is at the Elbo Room in the Mission for the monthly .b.o.d.y.h.e.a.t. party, tickets are $10 and the party starts at 10PM. I will most likely be attending this party, but before that I’ll be heading over to Paradise Lounge for their Holiday Party. Booze should be cheap and the DJs should be good and it’s FREE with an RSVP so if the recession’s got you down and you don’t feel like blowing all your cash Friday night, that could be an option too!

Then on Saturday night local krautrock endeavor Jonas Reinhardt is playing at the Hemlock Tavern with Tussle and Explode Into Colors. Tickets are $7 and the show starts at 9:30PM. But if krautrock isn’t your Saturday night scene, Gemini Disco is throwing their regular party at Underground SF in the Haight, and although I’ve never been, I might attend post the Reinhardt show. Tickets are $5 and the show goes til 2AM.
