Get the Dub Out Of Here

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

Shameless re-edits of popular tunes tend to really piss-off certain types of people, but ‘shameless’ is a concept we tend to whole-heartedly embrace around these corners of the interweb. So today I bring you two re-workings/re-edits/re-mixes/what have you, both with rockin’ FM hits as their source material.

Rove Dogs are a French edits duo who recently released the first EP in the Small Time Cuts series, which contains two disco tracks on the B-side, and this extension of The Eagles’ talk box workout “Those Shoes” on the other. Rove Dogs don’t do much with the song besides let that coked-up groove play out for a few minutes longer than the original, and in a lot of ways that’s fine by me. This one adheres to the tenets of the school of Terje- basically, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. And unless you agree with the Dude’s assessment of the LA super-group, I think you’ll find that nothing is broke about this one.

Next up is a reworking by Swedish mega-trio Västkustska Ryggdunkarsällskapet, which consists of the dudes in Tiedye (whose excellent remix of DJ Kaos we posted about just a couple weeks back) and Sankt Goran, who has released material on labels like Bear Funk and Solar Disco. The group released their second EP last year, which contains this funky edit of Tom Petty’s “Don’t Come Around Here No More”. Västkustska are far more liberal with their treatment of this tune, never letting Petty step too far into the picture by erasing both the verses and chorus. They do preserve much of the sitar melody from the original, as well as some “HEY!”s and “GIVE IT UP- STOP!”s, and it makes me seriously question why I never cared about this song in the first place.

Hola! Me llamo ‘Erik’…

My very first Disco Horror post! How exciting, amirite? Just want to say thanks to Ash and Max for welcoming me aboard the discohorror.blogspot.com company yacht, even though I already blew that Best Buy giftcard on the new Lionel Richie album (it has Akon on it!). Anyway, I figure I need to introduce myself a bit ’round these parts, but sometimes you can only express yourself through SONG. So allow me to introduce you to my new favorite jam, one that will no doubt end up as the soundtrack to epic summers around the world this year, the Tiedye mix of DJ Kaos‘ “Love the Night Away”.

DJ Kaos – Love The Night Away (Tiedye Mix)

DFA and Rong recently issued the 12″ vinyl release, which includes the original- a solid nu-disco banger in its own right, an instrumental version of the original, and this magical yachted-out Tiedye mix. You may remember Tiedye from their “Nothing Else Matters” 12 inch, or their remix of Rubies’ “I Feel Electric,” both released last year on Italians Do It Better. All of the mixes are good, but the Tiedye remix puts those gruff crooner vocals in their proper context- which happens to be a champagne-drenched balearic beach party. The lyrics are so ridiculous I can’t help but smile on each listen and wish that I was actually listening to the tune on a sunrise-lit beach somewhere in the Spanish Riviera.

Another mega-jam of mine this past month or so comes from Beautiful Swimmers, a DC-based outfit with a slammin 12″ out on the Future Times label. One side of the vinyl is designated for a theme-song of sorts, “Swimmer’s Groove,” which I swear samples “Wax the Van” by Lola (feel free to correct me here anyone) and can also be found on their excellent ‘Lifeguardians’ mix at the Future Times site. However, the side I favor the most holds a tune by the name of “Oh Yea” and features some great slo-mo new-beat drums and fx.

The duo have also prepared an excellent, rather psychedelic, exercise-themed music video for the track, which really drives the whole thing home if you ask me.

Finally, in order to fully introduce myself to Disco Horror readers out there, I have included a recent mix of mine that you all may very well dig. I did it solely with vinyl, and it’s veers between EBM, oddball disco, slo-mo edits, and italo- here’s the tracklist:

BEARDOBEAT Mix

Unfinished Business – Out of My Hands (Revenge Edit)
James Carmichael + Instant Funk – I Got My Mind Made Up (Instrumental)
Chocolette – Tell Me (That You Like It) (Party Mix)
The Popular People’s Front – My Baby Stays Out All Night
Les Edits du Golem – Eden Rock
The Tribe – Jungle Rock
Mark Shreeve – Legion (Space Mix)
Chris + Cosey – Arkade
Pankow – Girls + Boys (Betty Botox Edit)
Laid Back – White Horse
Severed Heads – Greater Dub (Hardway Bros. Edit + FX)
Tiger + Woods – Come Down
It’s A Fine Line – Woman (A Makhnovschina Reposession)

I Feel Electric

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

I first heard of Rubies earlier in the year when I picked up their I Feel Electric 12” for a version by Studio of their track “Room Without A Key”, which is absolutely brilliant, but I don’t need to go on about Studio any more. That release also came with “I Feel Electric”, an upbeat track with shimmering synths and sweet harmonies. Today I have for you a remix by Tiedye, the new act off of Italians Do It Better, who, like Studio, hail from Sweden (on an aside… why is everything out of Scandinavia so fucking cool?). Tiedye extend Rubies’ original with verby guitars similar and beautiful vocals, but where the Studio version keeps the energy at a typically mellow level, the Tiedye remix builds to a momentous climax like a wave surging over you, sweeping you away to a tropical sunset. I really can’t put it into words so just give it a listen, you will not regret it.

Italian disco god Daniele Baldelli needs no introduction. He is respected as one of the greatest DJs of all time and revered as the father of cosmic disco. Earlier this year he released a mixed compilation on Eskimo with fellow Italian Marco Dionigi titled Cosmic Disco?! Cosmic Rock!!. While I haven’t heard the mix yet, I did pick up one of the samplers (there are two) and it has enticed me to seek it out. The title is quite on the money with the three tracks included in Part Two so I won’t bother you with a description, so here is one of the B-side tracks by electro, new wave group The Dream Syndicate off of their 1986 album Out Of The Grey.

Maurice Fulton has been a force to be reckoned with in house music since the late 1990s and now he has a new album released by DFA under the moniker Syclops, where he produces and works with several studio musicians. The new album, I’ve Got My Eye On You, has an organic feel for electronic music, including live drums, piano and acoustic bass in addition to wild synth work. At times it can be a little too progressive and freeform for me, but this track holds down the fort with a classic house feel that I am truly a sucker for lately. The track then drifts off into a jazzy realm that doesn’t get too caught up in itself like other parts of the album.
